The CMCN Regional Meeting unites the powerhouse group that plans and pulls off the amazing Asilomar Math Conference every December. As a satellite of CMC we attend as representatives: Mary Ann for NCTM and I (Beth) for CMCFN. The group of about 25 educators meets 3x a year.
At the meeting we were energized by presentations using CCSS strategies.
One session focused on attaching fractions to the number line. This is a big drive in the CCSS. Sac State professors Deb Stetson and Scott Farrand showcased their professional development offerings with a fast paced demonstration of how to lead students to a discovery lesson that explains how to (and why to) convert fractions to mixed numbers, equivalent fractions and the pedagogy. We are planning to tap into their trained teachers to recruit for the fraction progression sessions we hope to offer at our conference on October 11th.
A great website to check out is http://www.estimation180.com where we tried out a galvanizing activity in 3 acts: Believe it or not, a large cabinet and a bunch of stickies can fascinate a group of math students!
The afternoon of the meeting was devoted to the business end of Asilomar and CMCN business in general.
Next meeting, May 10th.
