A team of 6 math teachers attended from our region:

Other CMCFN members who were in attendance & presenting were Stuart Moskowitz, session 340, and Calisa Holm, session 240. Three of the 2014 CMCFN conference presenters (including our keynoter, Patrick Callahan) were also in attendance and we were pleased to have had their presentations for our local community before they went to Asilomar. Small regional conferences are a good testing ground for Asilomar presenters to try out their sessions and revise as needed. We’ll remember to add that to our sales pitch as we recruit presenters for next year’s local conference.
We had a cabin as our on-grounds housing and greatly enjoyed sharing out our sessions each evening by the fire after dinner. We all volunteered for various jobs for the CMCN organizers and met many new colleagues while selling t-shirts, handing out registration bags, working the registration desk, relieving the NCTM rep for dinner, and presiding for presenters. CMCN gives affiliates money for the volunteer hours also. Networking opportunities happen everywhere: on the shuttle, in the dining hall, at the vendors’ booths and in the sessions. The facility and food were excellent and added to the overall experience.
Members of our group learned about many aspects of best teaching practices, CCSM, online math resources, vendors’ offerings and specific math tasks to take back our sites. Some favorites were: math talks with Cathy Humphries, Modeling with Andrew Stadel, Geogebra (http://www.geogebra.org), the resource site ck12.org (http://www.ck12.org), for digital curriculum
Keynotes by Tony DeRose of Pixar, and Jo Boaler of Stanford were highlights of the weekend.
One of our goals in attending was to look for possible keynoters for our next conference and we identified several who we will approach in the next few weeks: Since our conference is attended by 50 STEM teachers, we are keeping in mind that a STEM-compatible keynote might be appropriate.

Overall, the CMCFN members who traveled the 385 miles south to the CMCN conference found it well worth the time, expense and effort. We plan to attend again next year and hope to bring a few more members with us as well.
