AFFILIATE TRAINING 2/6/15![]() CMCFN report for CMC & membership - 2/6/15 Affiliate Training with Tim Kanold & 2/7/15, General Meeting of CMC/Asilomar reflection 2014 and planning 2015 and posted on blog at http://www.cmcfn.com Beth Baker, Pres. CMCFN; also attending, MaryAnn Sheridan. 2/6/15 Affiliate Training with Tim Kanold CMC-North Leadership Conference- Strategic Planning for Becoming a Coherent Great Organization and Mathematics Education Leader Affiliates were grouped by table and teams went through a one-day training process to re-vitalize and organize their groups. As well as CMC Far North, MESC, Sonoma County, Mt Lassen, Redding/Chico, San Fransisco, CMC and Fairfield sent teams. The day was spent in developing the beginning framework of a strategic plan and included advice on how to write both a Mission Statement and a Vision Statement (and the difference between them). In the morning, we did ground work on how to get strong volunteers, how to brand our affiliate, the 5 characteristics of greatness, and being mindful about input vs output. Our organization is not a business, so although we do have an input of $$, our output is not profits, but the completion of our mission, ie, to deliver high quality math PD to local educators. As the day progressed, we took several good steps toward strengthening our affiliate. Our Mission statement in draft form is: “ CMCFN provides professional learning opportunities to local math educators.“ and will be posted on the top of our website splash page soon. Our Vision Statement incorporates the letters CMCFN and the (very) rough draft is included in the photo below. In the afternoon, we planned and looked at our existing pool of potential volunteers and resources for our next math conference and checked our plans against our mission statement. We will re-define our grant offerings to bring them into line with our mission. Specifically, we will shift from funding classroom supplies to funding teacher collaboration/observation opportunities. General CMCFN report: 2/7/15 Awarded 2 grants Kept website updated/online registration & evals Working on getting keynoter for 10/10/15 conference Working with local STEM grant participants & local universities for $ and attendees. Calendaring meetings for March (in Fortuna), September (Arcata) and November (Arcata). One of our goals in attending was to look for possible keynoters for our next conference and we identified several who we will approach in the next few weeks: Since our conference is attended by 50 STEM teachers, we are keeping in mind that a STEM-compatible keynote might be appropriate. Possible candidates for the CMCFN 2015 conference are: Cathy Humphries Jo Boaler http://joboaler.com Andrew Stadel http://www.estimation180.com/lessons.html Robert Kaplinsky http://robertkaplinsky.com Paul Giganti http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1441975.How_Many_Snails_ Phil Daro http://serpmedia.org/daro-talks/ Overall, the CMCFN members who traveled the 385 miles south to the CMCN conference found it well worth the time, expense and effort. We plan to attend again next year and hope to bring a few more members with us as well. Respectfully Submitted, Beth Baker, President, CMCFN Teacher, Zane Middle School National Board Certified Contributing Author, CPM Connections 1,2,3 Minutes: Beth and MaryAnn attended the California Mathematics Council-Northern Section Board Meeting-February 7, 2015 at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, Santa Rosa. 9:00 a.m.-3:00
CMCN is the agency that organizes and puts on the Asilomar Math Conference each December in Monterey. http://cmc-math.org/conferences/cmc-north/ Introductions: Officers of the CMCN board introduced themselves, as did all attendees from No. CA CMC affiliates. Opening Activity: Rebecca “ A candy jar contains 5 Jolly Ranchers and 13 jawbreakers. If there was a candy jar with the same proportion of candies and there were 100 JRs, how many JBs would you have? Explain in a variety of ways.” A detailed conversation about how to get students to fully develop the concept of proportional relationships and how to represent them, and to predict what common errors might need to be planned for. This activity segued into a new book, Principals to Action, Ensuring Mathematics Success for All from NCTM The book offers guidance to all math ed stakeholders. The intent of looking at this book today as a call to action-do more in class and spread the word about best practices. Report from State Board: Rita- reports are available on CMCN’s website. Boards are especially motivated to keep membership growing. Other Asilomar Business/reflections April Affiliate Report outs: see link at http://cmc-math.org/cmc-organization/cmc-north/#northaffiliates to get details on the NorCAL math affiliates. 12:00 p.m. Lunch Asilomar 2014 debrief: Board Chairs reported out: Vendors: all but 2 showed up, hall was full and busy. Need a hat/t-shirt vendor. (Chris) Registration: There are a lot of volunteers to check in, and it sometimes gets a little confusing. (Rita) Program: Keynoters and sessions were great Saturday. 175 sessions 1539 attendees 12 and 23 rooms at the MS and Asilomar. Next year there will be sessions for a make-it-take-it and for pre service teachers. STEM & math modeling are also needed. Ignite sessions are ongoing for the next year before the President’s party Sat. night. Working on on-line evals, and social media. Committee was a group of 6 to help. Only 3 presenters cancelled. Very smooth overall. (Ana) Conference and Speaker Evals: low number of online conf. entries. Send blast to remind with the link. QR codes got 300+ for the speakers. Attendees would like a direct link to presenters materials. NCTM Book Table: 46% increase in sales- books were linked to program, and books were carefully chosen by best sellers in the national catalogue. Membership: 1500 is about 1/3 elem 1/3 middle and 1/3 high 2015 CMC-N Board meeting dates Grants: very few people apply up to $500 is easy for teachers to get. Next Meeting: May 30, 2015 3:00 p.m. Adjourn Asilomar Math Conference report for CMCFN membership- 12/6/14, posted on blog at http://www.cmcfn.com
Notes taken by Beth Baker, Pres. CMCFN A team of 6 math teachers attended from our region: Beth Baker Zane Middle school, Eureka, President of CMCFN, Presented session 342 Cathy Sinnen, Toddy Thomas Middle School, Fortuna, CMCFN raffle winner for Asilomar Ali Brewer, Academy of the Redwoods MaryAnn Sheridan, McKinleyville Middle School, NCTM rep & book sales, Ana Som, McKinleyville Middle School Lisa Klar McKinleyville Middle School (see Asilomar program here http://cmc-math.org/conferences/cmc-north/ ) Other CMCFN members who were in attendance & presenting were Stuart Moskowitz, session 340, and Calisa Holm, session 240. Three of the 2014 CMCFN conference presenters (including our keynoter, Patrick Callahan) were also in attendance and we were pleased to have had their presentations for our local community before they went to Asilomar. Small regional conferences are a good testing ground for Asilomar presenters to try out their sessions and revise as needed. We’ll remember to add that to our sales pitch as we recruit presenters for next year’s local conference. We had a cabin as our on-grounds housing and greatly enjoyed sharing out our sessions each evening by the fire after dinner. We all volunteered for various jobs for the CMCN organizers and met many new colleagues while selling t-shirts, handing out registration bags, working the registration desk, relieving the NCTM rep for dinner, and presiding for presenters. CMCN gives affiliates money for the volunteer hours also. Networking opportunities happen everywhere: on the shuttle, in the dining hall, at the vendors’ booths and in the sessions. The facility and food were excellent and added to the overall experience. Members of our group learned about many aspects of best teaching practices, CCSM, online math resources, vendors’ offerings and specific math tasks to take back our sites. Some favorites were: math talks with Cathy Humphries, Modeling with Andrew Stadel, Geogebra (http://www.geogebra.org), the resource site ck12.org (http://www.ck12.org), for digital curriculum Keynotes by Tony DeRose of Pixar, and Jo Boaler of Stanford were highlights of the weekend. One of our goals in attending was to look for possible keynoters for our next conference and we identified several who we will approach in the next few weeks: Since our conference is attended by 50 STEM teachers, we are keeping in mind that a STEM-compatible keynote might be appropriate. The CMCN Regional Meeting unites the powerhouse group that plans and pulls off the amazing Asilomar Math Conference every December. As a satellite of CMC we attend as representatives: Mary Ann for NCTM and I (Beth) for CMCFN. The group of about 25 educators meets 3x a year.
At the meeting we were energized by presentations using CCSS strategies. One session focused on attaching fractions to the number line. This is a big drive in the CCSS. Sac State professors Deb Stetson and Scott Farrand showcased their professional development offerings with a fast paced demonstration of how to lead students to a discovery lesson that explains how to (and why to) convert fractions to mixed numbers, equivalent fractions and the pedagogy. We are planning to tap into their trained teachers to recruit for the fraction progression sessions we hope to offer at our conference on October 11th. A great website to check out is http://www.estimation180.com where we tried out a galvanizing activity in 3 acts: Believe it or not, a large cabinet and a bunch of stickies can fascinate a group of math students! The afternoon of the meeting was devoted to the business end of Asilomar and CMCN business in general. Next meeting, May 10th. CA will not be giving the mult. choice style CST test this year. According to Tom Torlakson's office at the CDE, students in CA schools will either take the SBAC math or E/LA test this year. In California it is called the MAPP. Read more here
